[For Lockheed] Expecting the Unexpected

They had their little schedule - Dejah left her bedroom window open enough for Lockheed to enter if he decided to visit her in the night, or whenever he pleased, really. So it should have been no surprise to Dejah Thoris when her monthly bleeding didn't come. Nor should it have been a surprise when she took a home test and the results came through clear: Positive.

Pregnant.

She sat on the side of the bathtub, staring at the test in her hand. Hardly believing the clear facts that were before her.

Lockheed had of course relished every visit to Dejah since their first sexual encounter together, and it was a simple task to fly over to her apartment and enjoy each other's company once more, sex or otherwise. He had learnt some more about her home world and in turn she'd learnt more about his race and their travels in deep space since leaving their world.

He hadn't come every night, not wishing to exhaust her, but regularly was still the norm. He was visiting now, flying across and perching on the window to see if she could see her within, but of Dejah there was no sign.

It wasn't all about sex, Dejah genuinely enjoyed being with Lockheed. Even if it was a simple matter of resting on her couch, talking, reading, watching television. She enjoyed it all.

But this demanded her attention. Dejah couldn't take her eyes off the little white plastic test between her fingers.

With the bathroom so near her bedroom, she could hear the clack of his claws against the windowsill. Nervous, Dejah sat up and looked into the mirror, fluffing her hair and composing herself before she left the bathroom and slipped into her bedroom.

"Well, hello again," she smiles, trying to greet him with her usual warmth.

Whatever they did together was wonderful, both had a lot to say about many matters, and it was actually pleasant to learn about Earth customs together given they were both aliens.

He smiled at her lovingly when she entered, quickly coming to perch on the bedroom dresser. "Hey Dejah! Sorry if I caught yeh at a bad time, I was in the neighbourhood and thought I'd come and see the most beautiful lady in the cosmos." Probably a little thick but Lockheed did mean it, beauty wasn't skin deep anyway. "Are yeh ok?"

His words always do seem so sincere, so it's no surprise when Dejah blushes.

"No, no - not a bad time. This time is as good as any other," she replied. Dejah was so unsure, what was she to tell him? Did she just come right out with it? Or was she to wait?

No, this couldn't wait.

"I've...some news."

He is nevertheless pleased to know his words can bring such joy to her, though her hesitant expression did appear to him to be unusual.

"All times with yeh are good. Yeh have some news for me?" The dragon's face morphed into a curious expression.

Dejah simply nodded, unsure how to speak the words aloud. It was a good, long moment before she finally took a deep breath.

"I'm...expecting..." Dejah's eyes glanced up to take in his reaction. "That is to say, I'm pregnant."

Lockheed simply stared at her for a few seconds with increasingly wide eyes and surprise before he tried to speak, stopped and tried again.

"...wow. Yeh mean yeh and me are gonna be... it worked?" A huge smile appeared on his face. "That's awesome! I mean yeh feel ok, right? We probably gotta get things checked on something." His mind was quite racing with the possibilities, but above all he felt a wave of happiness.

Dejah smiled, relieved at the joy he exuded when she broke the news to him. But she nodded, even laughed softly.

"I'm well, yes. I've had headaches lately that I did not have before, but it's nothing I can't handle," she replied. "We should indeed have someone check things, now and throughout the process. Perhaps one of your scientist friends could be of assistance?"

It had been the sort of news he had hoped for, even if he was uncertain how such pregnancy would affect the woman he had such deep affections for. He flew to her side and hovering kissed her on the lips carefully, tiny paws on her cheeks.

"Good. I get the idea that humanoids get such things when they go through pregnancy, so it's all natural. And I agree, we need to know what kind of pregnancy yeh likely to have given our, ah, unique biology. And sure, Beast's a nice guy, he'd help us just fine. That or Reed Richards."

She leaned towards him a bit, returning the kiss with a warm smile before she glanced down to her belly - she wasn't quite showing just yet, and was curious if she would, given their physiological differences.

"Whichever one you think would be the best choice."

The dragon glanced down to her belly too. Since there was no reference to this there was little way of knowing when she might show, if at all. If it happened that she ended up laying eggs rather than live young, she could have them at some undetermined point. But Lockheed would be there for Dejah in all cases.

"Then we'll try Hank first, he's done such stuff before and knows me better. Just so yeh know he's kinda blue and furry cause he's a mutant, heads up." Heed kissed her again, a smile fixed on his face. "But we'd gotta celebrate! What do Barsoomians do when they're expecting?"

Dejah nodded slowly, her fingers instinctively drumming over her belly. A small smile tugged at the corners of her lips. Honestly, she couldn't wait to figure out exactly what kind of pregnancy to expect.

"Very well, Hank it is," she wasn't fazed at all by Lockheed's description of his companion. Dejah actually tilted a brow at him when he explained. "Really. The father of my child/children is a small dragon from space, and you think a hairy blue mutant is going to frighten me? As if I lack experience dealing with such beings..."

She couldn't help laughing. "Hmm...on Barsoom...typically there are great feasts held when a royal is expecting. There is also usually a blessing from the Priestess of Iss."

Lockheed couldn't wait either, whether their child or children took after her father or mother more they would be beautiful in his eyes, and he'd be by his lover every step of the way. He glanced down at the movement, curious as to when it might become visible, if indeed it did so.

He landed beside her on the sofa and gave a bemused shrug. "I guess yeh would be better than most, sorry. I just figured I'd warn yeh of what he looks like, he's totally nice and smart. Sounds fun, then we should probably have dinner together, something romantic. Blessings might be harder but if we need to go to Barsoom I guess that could be managed..."

Dejah smiled and gently reached over and stroked her fingers over his head and down his neck.

"We cannot get to Barsoom from here - not the proper Barsoom anyway - without a mirror from a Thern," Dejah told him.

Mars was Mars, yes. But it wasn't simply a matter of getting into a spaceship and going there. Her Mars, her Barsoom, was a bit different, required that particular transport in order to get to Helium.

"I don't require the blessings, this is a special case, is it not?" Dejah smiled. "I'm happy celebrating with you."

He sighed happily at her touch, excited at the prospect of having children together. He listened to her explanation regarding reaching Barsoom as being harder than expected - it wasn't quite the same as the Mars he knew, after all.

"That sounds a bit difficult, but if you're ok staying here that's fine. And this is a blessing regardless! All Heed needs to be happy is being here with yeh and raising our kids together."

Dejah leaned down to brush a kiss against the top of his head.

"I'm happy for that as well. Nothing else in the whole wide world matters than that."

Lockheed blushed slightly at her kiss before leaning up to give her one in return.

"Exactly, and whatever they're like and whatever happens they're gonna be beautiful, just like yeh."

Dejah had been careful as her pregnancy had progressed. Lockheed had introduced her to Beast, and he had proved a most knowledgeable doctor. He seemed fascinated when he would check the status of her brood.

It was after one such check, a bit later in the pregnancy when her belly was starting to swell, that Dejah stayed longer than usual. She held something in her hand, and had asked Beast to get Lockheed for her, as she knew him to be nearby.

Dejah couldn't stop smiling at the object in her hand.

Lockheed had been there for Dejah as often as he could in return, and once they'd introduced her to Hank he'd been as resourceful as ever, giving them advice all the way. The others were all supportive too, Katherine especially who was excited at becoming a Aunt, even if many of the team were amazed it was possible for a dragon and Barsoomian to reproduce together. Still, it was happening and both Heed and Dejah were evidently excited at becoming parents.

When Lockheed was called to the infirmary he flew across and perched close to her on the bed, glancing down happily at the swell of her stomach before back up to Dejah. "Yeh asked for me, my love? What is it?"

Dejah smiled as she looked down to Lockheed. She glanced between him and the item in her hand - a small little square, which she held aloft above his head.

"First sonogram," she smiled. "Would you like to see? There's quite a surprise in this picture..."

He was clearly excited at the prospect of seeing their children for the first time, and he nodded happily at her question whilst he glanced at the sonogram card curiously.

"I would like to very much! Guessing from yeh smile that it's a happy surprise..."

"Of course," she chuckled as she held down the picture for him to see.

They were dark shapes amidst white, like any sonogram. Two of them were distinct, not very big, but big enough to see.

"Twins, at least," Dejah pointed them out in the picture. "Live, not eggs - but they clearly take after you, I think the closest one there is starting to develop wings, see the shadow?"

The dragon peered closely at the sonogram before cooing happily. This was it, he had two children at least growing inside the woman he loved, and it looked liked they were going to be able to fly, certainly. He was also a little received that they were live young since he wasn't certain how Dejah would have handled pushing out eggs, or having to rest so close to them.

"This is wonderful, we're gonna have kids who can fly! I'm sure they'll have a lot of their mom in them too though."

Dejah smiled and laughed softly.

"I'm certain they'll take after the both of us - but the most interesting thing will be that they will have our traits and make them uniquely their own," she pointed out.

Her fingers ghosted over her belly again, eager to bring them to term and give birth - the typical expectant mother.

Heed put a paw over her belly covered hand to stroke it carefully, aware that she was probably both excited and nervous about giving birth to their children. And he was much the same as her, though definitely more excited.

"They'll be the best Barsoom/Flock kids we could ask for, I'm sure. Do yeh feel ok, want me to get anything for yeh?" He supposed he would be asking that question to her a lot in the next few months, even if he knew she wasn't made from glass, but he liked to show he wanted to take care of Dejah.

Was thinking of doing a time jump to when they check the babies?
