"Perhaps the competitions would be to show the boys skills. We can choose amongst those we feel showed great spirit and strength, rather than just the winners. I felt that a competition to show what the boys were capable of would be best, I would not mind a few scholarly types to be by my son's side to encourage him to improve his studies, but I do want warriors around him that are both cunning and strong to keep him safe.
